Rhodes Byzantine Music Association
"Evangelos Moutafis"

The oldest organization for Byzantine & Traditional Music on the beautiful island of Rhodes.

About us

The Rhodes Byzantine Music Association "Evangelos Moutafis" was founded in 1948, the year of the Dodecanese's integration into the Greek state, with the aim of preserving the local Byzantine chanting tradition in post-war Rhodes. A decisive milestone was 1934, with the official permit for the operation of catechism schools and the founding of the first School of Byzantine Music in Rhodes, on the initiative of the Metropolitan of Rhodes Apostolos Tryfonos and Deacon Apostolos Papaioannou.

In the post-war period (1948–1960), the Rhodian chanting identity was established through the actions of prominent chanters. A central figure was Evangelos Moutafis, who, having studied in Asia Minor, distinguished himself for his contribution to the preservation of the patriarchal style, the experiential transmission of oral tradition, and the shaping of the post-war generation of chanters in Rhodes.

From 1948 to the present, the Association has functioned as a vehicle of historical memory and a guardian of the Byzantine chanting art in Rhodes, contributing to the preservation of liturgical ethos, the systematic transmission of chanting knowledge, and the connection of tradition with the modern cultural life of the region.
